North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue proposed a 5 percent tax increase on all alcohol. The legislature amended the tax to only affect liquor, and then eventually passed an increase of more than 20 percent on all alcohol.

In the 2009 session the Illinois legislature passed its first public works bill in 10 years. The bill includes a 90 percent increase in alcohol tax to cover part of the $31 billion cost of the bill.
